So let me get this straight. The Afghans are mad because Korans, which Afghan prisoners have already desecrated, were burned. The Afghans can't take it so they start killing our troops.

I just finished reading Winston Churchill's book "THE STORY OF THE MALAKAND FIELD FORCE" .

Here are three quotes from the book. Remember this book was written by one of the most famous people in the world before he became famous. In 1897 to be exact. He states:

"Except at the times of sowing and of harvest, a continual state of feud and strife prevails throughout the land. Tribe wars with tribe. The people of one valley fight with those of the next. To the quarrels of communities are added the combats of individuals. Khan assails khan, each supported by his retainers. Every tribesman has a blood feud with his neighbor. Every man's hand is against the other, and all against the stranger."

"Indeed it is evident that Christianity, however degraded and distorted by cruelty and intolerance, must always exert a modifying influence on men's passions, and protect them from the more violent forms of fanatical fever, as we are protected from smallpox by vaccination. But the Mahommedan religion increases, instead of lessening, the fury of intolerance. It was originally propagated by the sword, and ever since, its votaries have been subject, above the people of all other creeds, to this form of madness. In a moment the fruits of patient toil, the prospects of material prosperity, the fear of death itself, are flung aside. The more emotional Pathans are powerless to resist. All rational considerations are forgotten. Seizing their weapons, they become Ghazis -- as dangerous and as sensible as mad dogs: fit only to be treated as such."

"... civilisation is confronted with militant Mahommedanism. The forces of progress clash with those of reaction. The religion of blood and war is face to face with that of peace. Luckily the religion of peace is usually the better armed."

The USA easily defeated the Taliban ten years ago but it seems we are having a hard time giving the Afghan people peace and prosperity. Or maybe it is something else. Consider this. The US Army can take an out of shape 18 year old. Give him two months of Basic training, two months of Advanced Infantry training, three weeks of Airborne jump school, another two months of Ranger School and he will be trained good enough to plan and execute a raid like the one on Osama's compound. Don't believe me? Research it.

So it takes well under a year to fully train an inexperienced but motivated trooper. And that is the problem. We have been there ten years and still the Afghans just are not motivated to fight for their own freedom and security. Perhaps they just do not want the wonderfulness we offer. I have a friend in the Army reserves who just returned from a year in Afghanistan. He told me He and his men never turned their backs on the Afghan troops they was working with. I heard the same things, back in 1972, from Paratroops returning from Vietnam.

Again from Churchill:

"The "Full steam ahead" method would be undoubtedly the most desirable. This is the military view. Mobilise, it is urged, a nice field force, and operate at leisure in the frontier valleys, until they are as safe and civilised as Hyde Park. Nor need this course necessarily involve the extermination of the inhabitants. Military rule is the rule best suited to the character and comprehension of the tribesmen. They will soon recognise the futility of resistance, and will gradually welcome the increase of wealth and comfort that will follow a stable government. Besides this, we shall obtain a definite frontier almost immediately. Only one real objection has been advanced against this plan. But it is a crushing one, and it constitutes the most serious argument against the whole "Forward Policy." It is this: we have neither the troops nor the money to carry it out."

WOW! 115 years ago a 23 year old English Cavalry officer summed up the reality of our entire 2012 Afghan policy. "We have neither the troops nor the money to carry it out."

We won the war and lost the peace. We need to bring our troops home.
